Indebted

When you take the decision to live abroad, be it for work or study, you don't realize how much of "you" has been left behind, until you've been away for a while. More precisely, until it's your birthday and you're receiving phone calls from miles away, but no one in the same room knows today is a special day for you. It hits you hard when your best friend gives birth to her first baby, when your grandma passes away and you don't attend the funeral, when your other best friend gets engaged, when you miss all the weddings and baptisms. You realize that life back home is never going to wait for you to get back. You also realize that you become your own support, your own backbone.

However, I want to take a moment to think of all the amazing people I have met traveling. It's incredible how you can find persons so similar to you at the end of a 25-hour trip with two stops, for example. Recalling the two times I lived abroad (Spain for my master's, and now Guatemala for work), I feel truly humbled and indebted to every single beautiful individual that helped me feel not so estranged at a country where I felt stranded from my immediate family and lifetime friends. Distance and time difference are more powerful than anyone thinks.

I will forever owe my survival wherever I lived away from home to the great friends I met abroad and who, in a way, became my family, and I became theirs. We become each others' support and comfort zones, eventually making life away from our homes, livable.

When you are a traveler, you have a different, wider, more diverse, panoramic and tolerant perspective in life. So, most of the time, when you meet other travelers, from your nationality or not, there's a certain "click" that happens. No one will understand your concerns, fears, disappointments, unmet expectations, and crushing stress, more than people who're going through the exact same feelings and experiences every day. Knowing that these people exist is more than enough to give you motivation to get out of bed every morning.

To all my amazing friends abroad, whom I consider to be family as well, source of my pride and comfort (and I hope I am to them), I am forever indebted to you (and you know yourselves). Thank you for existing and for being who you are!

Confessions of a (Very) Young Diplomat

Cairo, Egypt (Lotus Building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs appears on the left)

I am a young diplomat. A very young diplomat. In fact, I am only beginning my career, and this is during a harsh transitional period of my country's history. Things are changing. They are changing fast. People, too, are changing. The whole scene is unbelievably unstable... even on a personal level!

I recently got posted to our Embassy in Guatemala. I am supposed to begin working there at the beginning of August. They speak Spanish over there, and I am quite excited to repeat the experience I have lived in Spain. I cannot wait to be talking to people on the street, in the supermarket, at the gym, on the bus... in their own language. I am looking forward to overhearing hilarious conversations about silly partners and funny jokes. I would like to listen to the local news and participate in debates. I want to visit every single inch of that country, see all its Mayan monuments and take a tan in every single beach, and bathe both at the Pacific Ocean and at the Caribbean. I will learn how to dance all the beautiful Latin dances, and if I can, I want to take guitar lessons. I want to live, to work, to meet important people, to walk the streets, to go out with friends. I guess I am looking forward to the new adventure.

Nevertheless, even though I have had several adventures before, this time is different. This time I am alone. I will be thousands of kilometers away. I will be fully responsible for my work, for my job, for my house, for my entire life. Guatemala seems to be a pretty challenging place. I understand things will not be as easy and laid back as they were in Spain. Life will not be free of responsibilities as it was in the US. It will not consist of endless road trips as it did in Denmark, or political research like it was in Czech Republic. And it certainly will not be filled with drives up the mountains and dinners among the clouds like Lebanon.

Guatemala City, Guatemala

Allow me to be frank: I am scared to death!

My job is not just a means for earning a living. My job is -or at least, that's how I perceive it- to be a part of my country everywhere I go. My job is to be shy, yet sociable; abundant, yet simple; confident, yet humble; timid, yet friendly; beautiful, yet tough. My job is to be all those at once: to be my country as it is. In a way, I feel responsible, and I feel the responsibility is just huge! It is huge to the extent of intimidation!

I am about to give three years of my life to my country, to go work for my country in a different, distant place on this planet. I will leave my best friends, my mother, my father, and my amazing brothers. I will be alone in Christmas and Easter, without my aunt shoving food down my throat and my grandma laughing at our selfie mania. I will not be here when my friends have their first baby. I will be without my aging dog, who might even die while I am there. I will not be here to say goodbye.

I am about to put everything I have at the service of this mission: all I learned in my life, the languages I master, the politics and economics I studied, the gender and human rights issues I am so passionate about, and the few social skills I have. In brief, my past 26 years of life will serve these 3 years ahead of me. I will surely learn much, but first, I need to invest what I already have in order to enjoy the returns on investment.

My idea is to represent this nation, my nation. To work for the people, even if my contribution will only be a drop in the ocean. It is still considered water, right? Without my little work, one brick will be missing from that massive wall called "home".

I am looking at three years of new things, people, and places. I am afraid and excited at the same time. I want to be up to everybody's expectations: my parents, my boss, my friends, the institution I am part of, and my extended family. I wish to be up to my own expectations and standards. I want to make myself proud and happy at the end of this period.

I will need all the prayers and the support I can get, especially while I am there alone, sometimes counting the days to be back. I know what I want, but I will need assurance and compassion. I am embarking on a tough experience and I realize this. God, help!

Reflections On Witnessing Two Revolutions... From Abroad

I witnessed the two most important events in my country during the past 3 years like foreigners: I watched it all on a stupid TV screen. When January 25 protests started in 2011, I was in Denmark on an exchange program for two months. After the fall of the Mubarak regime, I was skeptical, but I was so excited to see people's faces and listen to random citizens on the street reflecting on the whole thing. The sight of Egyptian flags, which wasn't normal before the revolution, was so heart-warming. People felt national pride. It's an incomparable sense of achievement.

Again, on June 30, 2013, while almost all of my friends, relatives, and childhood companions took to the street against Morsi, I was in Spain doing my master's and watching CNN and Spanish television calling it a "coup"!

When my foreign friends think about instability in my country, when I talk to them, enthusiastically, about recent events back home, the first thing that comes to their minds is: I don't want to go back! I sympathize with them. They, too, are victims of unjust politicians. The difference between my country and theirs, in many cases, is that the political system in their country/ies (with all its deficits) is very well-established and deep-rooted. Talking about "toppling" a regime in their context is a little too dreamy (but again, who would've thought that anything near the Arab Spring would ever take place?!)...

What my dear friends haven't experienced in their lives is that when the pressure is higher, our natural reaction is a desire to get closer to the center of trouble, to carry the load with brothers and sisters we don't know, to face a security vehicle hand-in-hand with strangers, to stand near Mohamed Mahmoud Street with a scarf on your nose and mouth and let the tear gas of the fights deep into the street affect you. You're protesting an unfair Constitutional Decree while your fellow freedom-fighters are losing their eyes, their arms, their legs, or even their lives on a battleground located downtown Cairo.

In these moments, the worst thing a loved one can do to you is beg you to stay at home and watch it all through the stupid box called television! How can I just watch life go by? I can't lay on the couch watching history being made. I am history! It's my future on stake! I either be part of it, or die trying! It's that simple.

As idealistic as this might sound, I want to be there at the time of change. I want to be part of the change. I was born an Egyptian, I can never change that. I'm a Middle Eastern, Arab girl, and I love being who I am. I realize our societies have a lot of social syndromes, but the potential that lies behind, is overwhelming. I will never be you, and you will never be me. However, what we can do is what we do everyday: we be humans. We don't judge each others neither by our appearances nor by our mistakes. Our mutual compassion is genuine and we find infinite happiness in each others' company.

One more traveling experience, this time is also a study experience, and it's hitting me in the face: I come from a different world. It's almost a whole new planet. But at the same time, we're more similar than I thought! We're both too excited at small things and we get angry if our friends hang out and don't tell us. All boys check out girls and all girls check out boys! We all worry about what to wear if that special someone will be at the party. We appreciate good food and flatter the cook infinitely. We love the sun, the beach, and the trees. If we can, we'd bring the world to our friends and family just to make them feel comfortable when they visit us.
